Reclaim The Night – Reclaim Your Story!

11/12/2025

November 25 @ 17:00 – 19:00

Come join Nottingham City of Literature and Nottingham Feminist Archive Group for an evening of writing, sharing, and connecting, inspired by the voices and stories held with the Feminist Archive East Midlands. This is a gentle, supportive space to explore your voice, honour our histories, and find strength in collective creativity.

When we tell our stories, share them with each other, we realise we are not alone. We
begin to see the system behind violence and inequality. They are the connection to take
action. Come write with us and reclaim your voice, your story, and our streets!

On 25th November, the International Day for the Elimination of Sexist Violence,
we invite you to join us for an evening of creativity, reflection, and connection at
Nottingham Women’s Centre.

Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature and Nottingham Feminist Archive Group emphasise that this workshop is especially for FLINTA* (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people).

What to expect:

We will spend time looking at our feminist history! We will draw inspiration from materials in the Feminist Archive at the Women’s Centre and learn more about feminism in Nottingham throughout its history. From the city’s radical past to the voices of today, we will connect our own experiences to this story.

Together, we’ll ask: how can we reclaim our voices? How can creativity help us resist everyday sexism? What happens when our stories come together in solidarity?

This will be a mindful and inclusive space where everyone is welcome, whether you’ve never written before or have been writing for years. There is no pressure to share your writing aloud. This is a space to feel comfortable, express yourself in your own way, and find strength in being together.

Through gentle prompts, open conversation, and time to write, we will create a supportive environment where you can listen, imagine, and connect. You are welcome just as you are. Your words hold the power to create change!

Schedule:

  1. Welcome & introductions
  2. Introduction to the Feminist Archive East Midlands
  3. Writing exercises & prompts
  4. Optional sharing & discussion
  5. Reflection & close
  6. Optional tour of the archive & library in the attic (not fully accessible)

Your facilitator:

The workshop will be led by Kate MacAlister, a poet, researcher, and feminist activist whose work explores the body as a site of protest and reclamation. Before focusing on writing and activism, Kate worked in gynaecology, giving her a unique perspective on the female body, care, and embodied experience. A founding member of the Women’s Strike movement, she has spent years engaging with feminist history and activism, exploring how personal stories and creative expression can challenge patriarchal oppression.

Her writing connects lived experience with collective struggle, using poetry and storytelling to illuminate the politics of everyday life, the power of the body, and the importance of solidarity. With Kate, participants will have the chance to explore their own voices in a supportive, reflective, and creative space.

Practical Info:

  • Date: 25 November 2025
  • Time: 5pm – 7pm
  • Location: Nottingham Women’s Centre, downstairs welcome space (fully
  • accessible)
  • Refreshments: Tea, coffee, and biscuits provided
  • Bring: Your favourite pen and notebook (optional)

Nottingham UNESCO City of Literature and Nottingham Feminist Archive Group use FLINTA (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people) to recognise that patriarchal violence doesn’t only target cis women. Sexism and gender-based violence affect many people whose identities are marginalised by patriarchal structures. This term makes space for everyone who experiences sexism and gendered violence, and centres solidarity across our different identities.
