Please read this guest post from Sonia Burns, Independent Advocate at POhWER, who will be running a Women’s Self Advocacy Workshop, here at Nottingham Women’s Centre on Tue, the 23rd October.
What is advocacy?
Advocacy is speaking up, for yourself and others.
In this short workshop, delivered by two female Independent Advocates from the advocacy charity POhWER, we will look at self advocacy or speaking up for yourself.
We will learn about some of the tools or skills you might need to do this and look at the situations where you might find yourself using advocacy skills.
We will relate this to the history of women’s rights and look at when women have used advocacy skills to make a difference to their lives and empower themselves and their peers.
You might not be familiar with the word but I’m pretty confident you will have used ‘self advocacy’ skills at some point or advocated on behalf of friends and family.
Come and learn a bit more about a useful and transferable skill.
After the course we hope you will have a basic knowledge and understanding of what advocacy is and how you can self-advocate in different circumstances.
I hope to see you on the 23rd of October, please see our flyer for more details and how to book a place on this free course – http://www.nottinghamwomenscentre.com/event/womens-self-advocacy-workshop/
