Nottingham Citizens update

Nottingham Citizens is a diverse alliance of community organisations from faith, education, trade union and charities committed to working together for the common good of Nottinghamshire. Nottingham Women’s Centre is a member of Nottingham Citizens.

Tuesday 3rd May was the Nottingham Citizens Accountability Assembly – the event at which we brought 1000 people together in a room to put forward our ‘asks’ to those in power. We asked for commitments around issues such as women’s safety, mental health and social care, diversity and sanctuary. A large part of the evening was given over to the local Police and Crime Commissioner candidates, ahead of the elections on 5th May.

Various commitments were secured at the event including:

  • For the PCC to commit a budget for the duration of their term in office for a communications campaign tackling misogyny, street harassment and other forms of violence against women.
  • For the police to introduce proactive mentoring, training and recruitment to ensure greater representation of women & BME candidates in senior roles.
  • For the CCG and Nottinghamshire Healthcare Trust to ensure that referrals pathways for mental health services are made clear and publically available, so that it is easier for people to get the help they need.
  • For the CCG, NUHT and Nottingham City Council to work together on developing an assessment of loneliness for those in social care.
  • For Nottingham City Council to introduce the Living Wage in social care contracts by 2019.

These are just some of the commitments that were made on the night but we’ll aim to update you in a few weeks with the final list of commitments made, and the plans to follow these up over the coming months.
