Our Fundraising Champion Completes 5k Swim

Catherine Hancock has now completed the second phase of her fundraising efforts on behalf of Nottingham Women’s Centre – a 5k open water swim.  She still has one challenge to go, the Erewash sprint triathlon. We are really inspired by Catherine’s dedication! Here is what she had to say about the challenges she has taken on:

“This year I decided to take on a challenge of completing 186km of activities whilst fundraising for an important cause.

I have fundraised for other women’s organisations in the past and this year wanted to focus on somewhere locally. It was then that I was introduced to Nottingham Women’s Centre by one of its trustees.

When I went along to visit the Centre I was really impressed by the space and services it provides. It’s essential that women are provided with these safe and supportive environments where they can improve their own lives and the lives of others. For this reason, I jumped at the chance to raise money for them. Keeping this in mind is what would get me through the training.

I love a fitness challenge, and the more it takes me out of my comfort zone the better! I decided to go for a 100-mile bike ride, a 5k open water swim and a sprint triathlon – not all on the same day though! Looking at the dates of each event I realised that I would be completing these within two months. Better get training!

First up was the bike ride. Fresh off holiday I thought I’d be ok with the distance as I did a bike event last year and cycle to work every week. No way! To complete a 100-mile distance, you have to train for it and I did get caught out a bit. It didn’t help that the last 50 miles were up and downhill, so I was pleased to finish that. Walking up and down stairs the next day was eventful too – ouch!

I think the hardest part so far has been the swimming; it has meant early morning starts so I can get 2 hours of training in. Also, swimming up and down in a local pool is not that exciting, so it has been mentally tough continuing with that and then going back for more on another day.

On the day of the swim event though I loved it. The water wasn’t too cold (or dirty), the weather was on our side and I completed it well within the timeframe the organisers had set (phew!).

Finally, in a couple of weeks I have the Erewash sprint triathlon; this is a great little event that’s really well organised and I think I’m ready for this. I’ll keep you posted.

My goal has been to raise £500, and so far I’ve raised £165, so it’s going well. Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me so far. I really appreciate it as it’s going to make a positive difference for someone.”
