Holistic therapies offer a natural way to unwind and recharge

Sue is an experienced professional in the complementary therapy industry. She has delivered her low-cost treatments at Nottingham Women’s Centre, as a volunteer, for nearly 10 years now. We think that’s amazing! We asked Sue to share a little bit of her knowledge and experience and tell us about her work at the Centre.

How did you get into it?

It’s simply a passion of mine, especially aromatherapy. When my daughter was little, I went back to college and retrained.  I did my diploma in alternative and complementary therapies and after I completed my course, I began to volunteer at the centre. I wanted to thank Nottingham Women’s Centre for all the help I had when I was doing courses here and for the childcare support that was provided at the time when I was doing my diploma.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering here?

Meeting new women, because everyone has a different story. I hope my treatments help even if just for that one hour, they can shut off from everything else and give that time to themselves. In addition, simply giving suggestions women can take away and work on to help themselves feel better.

What are the main skills you need to work as a holistic therapist?

Listening and being non-judgemental because everyone is different. Patience and really wanting to help on a physical level. Helping to give peace of mind, to help them believe in themselves, and to let them know they can do whatever they want to do.

For those who have never had a treatment, what would you recommend trying first?

It really does depend. Swedish massage is very good at breaking down the tension in your shoulders but can be quite firm, not everyone likes that! Aromatherapy uses essential oils, and the benefits can last up to 7 days once absorbed into the skin. It can be very relaxing or uplifting depending on the oils used. Reflexology is done mainly on the feet. Different points on the feet reflect different parts of the body – it helps the body as a whole. Don’t worry if your feet are tickly, I’m not there to tickle!
